Vilas Muttemwar (orig. Muthyamwar) (born 22 March 1949) was a member of the 14th Lok Sabha of India. He represented the Nagpur Lok Sabha constituency of Maharashtra and is a member of the Indian National Congress (INC) political party. He is former minister of state (independent charge) of Ministry of New and Renewable Energy of India. He lost the 2014 Lok Sabha elections to BJP candidate Nitin Gadkari from the Nagpur (Lok Sabha constituency). He had earlier been elected to 7th (1980-84), 8th, 10th 12th (1998-99), 13th (1999-2004), 14th (2004-09) and 15th Lok Sabha (2009-14).
Muttemwar's family ethnic Telugu (Perkiwar) settled in Maharashtra with no known direct links to Andhra Pradesh and in fact, do not even speak Telugu.
The Dream Project - Mihan
Vilas Muttemwar is considered as pioneer of the MIHAN Project in Nagpur. He has been constantly following up the project. Former Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Vilasrao Deshmukh acknowledged, by saying Vilas Muttemwar has written almost 5000 letters to the Civil Aviation ministry, Government of Maharashtra and the Prime Minister's office.
Conflict with Local Leaders
Vinod Gudadhe Patil has been opposing the MIHAN Project, he also led a protest march against Muttemwar and the MIHAN land acquiring team. Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel wanted to move MIHAN Project to Chakan, Pune. However direct and strong criticism from Muttemwar has made it difficult for him. Praful Patel is Member of Parliament from Nationalist Congress Party NCP.
Vidarbha Statehood
After positive action in December 2009, on part of the Central Government regarding Telangana state in Andhra Pradesh, Vilas Muttemwar is now leading the statehood movement for a separate Vidarbha state.
