History
It is believed that in ancient days, this place was used as an army Training Camp in Travancore Kingdom (Nearby Padmanabhapuram Palace). Villu means Arrow and Kuri means aiming it. It was the place where MARTHANDAVARMA used to store weapons for the BATTLE OF COLACHEL. The army for the battle was brought from this place. There is a big fort called VILLUKURI FORT where he used to train his soldiers. After the defeat of dutch, captain DILENOY gave training to the travancore army in this fort. There were special training given for using cannons, gun etc.But today the dignity of the fort had been lost due to lack of protective measures by the government. Now the fort is an open forest without any protection. We must have to realize its historical importance as it has a great role in history of travancore. We have to make it as a historical monument.
It consists of various small villages like Manakarai, Thiruvidaikode famous for Lord Siva Temple called Chadaiyappar temple, Madathattuvilai (Madam means Houses, so which means people built built houses and settled in the area), Kuthiraipanthivilai (which means Horse resting area), karavilai, Melapallam, Keelapallam etc. Madathattuvilai is known for the St.Sebastian Church and the kurusadi. We have St.Lawrence Hr Sec School in Madathattuvilai. Karavilai is a small village in the villukuri panchayat. Karavilai is known for its 300 years ancient Sri Bathrakali temple and once in 12 years, the temple celebrates festival in a grand manner. In villukuri there is one famous Siva Temple called Chadaiyappar temple. On Sivalaya Ottam this temple is the 9th one. Sivarathri Sivalaya ottam is one of the best festival in Kanyakumai District.
