Vinje is a former municipality in Sør-Trøndelag county, Norway. It is located in the southern part of the present-day municipality of Hemne. The village of Vinjeøra, at the end of the Vinjefjorden, was the municipal center of Vinje. The lake Vasslivatnet lies in the east part of Vinje.[1]

The name

The municipality of Vinje (originally the annex) was named after the old Vinje farm (Old Norse: Vinjar), since the first church was built there. The name is the plural form of vin which means "meadow" or "pasture".

History

Originally (since 1838) Vinje was a part of the municipality of Hemne (see formannskapsdistrikt). The annex of Vinje actually belonged to the county of Møre og Romsdal - while the main parish of Hemne belonged to the county of Sør-Trøndelag. But according to the law of Formannskapsdistrikt a parish could no longer be divided between two counties, so the annex of Vinje had to be transferred to the county of Sør-Trøndelag.

On 1 July 1924, the municipality of Vinje was established when it split off from Hemne. Initially, it had a population of 716. On the same date Snillfjord was separated from Hemne as well. On 1 January 1964, the municipalities of Vinje and Hemne as well as the western part of Heim were merged to form a new, enlarged municipality of Hemne. Before the merger, Vinje had a population of 576.[2]
