Visakhapatnam Airport (IATA: VTZ, ICAO: VOVZ) is a customs airport located in Visakhapatnam, India. It is the largest and busiest airport in the state of Andhra Pradesh. It is approximately 12 km (7.5 mi) from Visakhapatnam and operates as a civil enclave on an Indian Navy airfield named INS DEGA. The airport has experienced significant growth in the last decade, with the construction of a new terminal and runway and commencing of international flights to Dubai, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.[4]

History

In 1999, the airport commenced civilian operations with one flight per day. The original runway was 6,000 ft (1,800 m) long and a new 10,007 ft (3,050 m)-long and 60 m (200 ft)-wide runway was inaugurated on 15 June 2007 to accommodate medium-sized and wide body aircraft. With the installation and calibration of the instrument landing system on runway 28, the airport got night landing facilities in July 2007, with the inaugural flight of Dornier Do 228 operated by Indian Navy. The night landing facility became operational from 30 March 2008 for commercial Airlines, SpiceJet is the first Airline to use night landing facility at Visakhapatnam Airport. A new terminal building was inaugurated on 20 February 2009 and became operational on 27 March 2009.[5]

Terminals

The airport has two adjacent terminals. Currently the integrated terminal is being used for both International and Domestic purpose. Airport Authority of India has converted the old terminal into a Full-fledged cargo complex.

Passenger terminal

As the part of modernizing 35 non-metro airports, AAI constructed a state-of-art new integrated passenger terminal adjacent to the old terminal.The 1 billion (US$15 million) new integrated passenger terminal building was inaugurated on 20 February 2009. A total of 350 acres (140 ha) land area is used for Airport Construction. This terminal with an area of 20,470 m2 (220,300 sq ft) can handle a passenger capacity of 375 on arrival and 750 on departure. The airport parking area has the capacity to park 300 cars. Expansion

Due to growing Air traffic at Visakhapatnam Airport, AAI has planned to construct 6 additional Parking Bays at Visakhapatnam Airport by extending the Apron towards NH5.

Cargo terminal

Considering the growing cargo potential in Visakhapatnam Airport, AAI has decided to modify old terminal into a full-fledged cargo complex. Which can handle 2 B734F or 1 B747F at a time.

Runways

Visakhapatnam airport has two runway 10/28 (North-west - South-East Orientation) of length 3,050 m (10,010 ft) and 05/23 (North-west - South-east orientation) with Length of 1,829 m (6,001 ft). Airport uses Runway 10/28 as the Primary Runway for both Civil aand Military use. Visakhapatnam Airport has VOR/DME,NDB navigation aids. Landing Aids and Visual Instruments available at Visakhapatnam airport on Runway 28 are ILS CAT I, PAPI 3° and HIALS. Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI)-type landing aids are available in all the runways. Runway 10 is not allowed for Civil Flights and Runway 05/23 are used for Naval Operations. Runway 05 is Equipped with ALS PAPI-L and Runway 23 is Equipped with PAPI-L with angle of 3°.

Runway 05/23 has 4 taxiways connecting the New and Old Military Aprons at Visakhapatnam Airport. It runs between runway 10/28 and Old Runway 09/27(now converted into Taxiway for Old Apron) connecting the Cargo Terminal at Visakhapatnam by N1 & N2 Taxiways.

Visakhapatnam airport is equipped with VSP (VOR frequency 116.60 MHz), VVZ (VOR/DME frequency 114.00 MHz) and NDB (VZ frequency 244 kHz). Communication frequencies for Tower is 119.7 MHz & 124.3 MHz and Approach is 123.5 MHz. The airport operates on a 24-hours basis.

Connectivity

Apart from Normal Cab and Radio Taxi Services. APSRTC has Introduced Volvo Metroluxury Low Floor Air Conditioned Buses from Airport to Dwaraka Nagar Bus Station(RTC Complex) and Kakinada from 22 August 2015.Including this all city services from and to Gajuwaka and Steel Plant have a stop here.
