Vista Equity Partners is an American private equity firm focused on software and technology-enabled businesses. The firm was founded in 2000 and has offices in Austin, Texas, Chicago, Illinois, and San Francisco, California.[1]

History

Vista Equity Partners was founded in 2000 by Robert F. Smith. It is a leading private equity firm focused on investing in software and technology-enabled businesses.[2]

The firm made investments in BigMachines starting January 2001.[3] Additional investments were made through 2012,[4] until BigMachines was sold to Oracle Corporation in October 2013.[5][6]

DataCore Software was another early investment in 2001.[7]

Vista agreed to acquire SumTotal Systems in May 2009 for about $160 million, which closed in July.[8][9] Vista also acquired the finance-related software business MicroEdge from Advent Software for $30 million, in July 2009.[10][11]

In June of 2012, Vista acquired Boston-based CRM Software provider focused on the recruitment industry, Bullhorn, Inc. for a reported price of several hundred million dollars.[12][13]

In May 2013 Vista announced it would acquire Websense (public since 2000) for an estimated $906 million.[14] The deal closed June 25 for about $1 billion.[15][16]

In September 2013 a new round of funding[17] and a bid of over $1 billion was announced for Active Network, Inc, which runs event registration web sites.[18][19] Vista has since acquired Lanyon, Inc., a software company based out of Dallas, Texas, with whom they merged a portion of Active Network's Business Solutions Group (BSG).[20]

In September 2014, Vista announced that Microedge will be sold to Blackbaud, Inc. for $160 million in the 4th quarter of 2014.[21]

In September 2014, an unnamed source reported that Vista Equity Partners was seeking buyers for its financial software providing firm Misys, or that possibly it was considering an initial public offering; Vista has denied these rumors. [22]

Vista Equity Partners revealed in September 2014 that it would acquire TIBCO Software for $4.3 billion.[23]

In June 2015, Vista Equity Partners acquired Student Information System assets from Pearson PLC, including PowerSchool, the largest K-12 student information system (SIS), supporting 15 million students in 73 countries.[24]

In June 2015, Vista Equity Partners acquired Mediaocean, a software provider for the advertising industry. [25]

In September 2015, the company announced an agreement to acquire Solera Holdings for approximately $6.5 billion.[26]
