Vitalik Buterin is a programmer & writer. He is primarily known as a co-founder of Ethereum, and as a co-founder of Bitcoin Magazine.[2][3][4] In 2014, Buterin won the World Technology Award for the co-creation and invention of Ethereum.[5]

Personal Life

Buterin was born in Russia, grew up in Canada, and currently resides in Zug, Switzerland.[6]He attended the University of Waterloo but dropped out to work on blockchain projects.[7] In 2014 Buterin received the Thiel Fellowship.[8]

Bitcoin Journalist

Buterin became interested in bitcoin in 2011, and co-founded the periodical Bitcoin Magazine that year.[9] [2][4] As of 2014, he served as head writer for the magazine, and had written about bitcoin-related topics for other publications, including Bitcoin Weekly.[2][10] Bitcoin Magazine in 2012 later began publishing a print edition and has been referred to as the first serious publication dedicated to cryptocurrencies.[11] He held a position on the editorial board of Ledger, a peer-reviewed scholarly journal that publishes full-length original research articles on the subjects of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology.[12]

Ethereum

He is a co-creator and inventor of Ethereum, described as a “decentralized mining network and software development platform rolled into one” that facilitates the creation of new cryptocurrencies and programs that share a single block chain (a cryptographic transaction ledger).[13][14]

Open source software

Buterin has contributed as a developer to other open source software projects.[2] Some early examples are: Kryptokit, pybitcointools, multisig.info, and btckeysplit.[15] He also contributed to DarkWallet [16] by Cody Wilson, Bitcoin Python (software) libraries,[17] and the cryptocurrency marketplace site Egora.[3] as of 2016
