WTOP-10 T.V. is a student television station in Oswego, New York. Originating on the SUNY Oswego campus and seen on cable channel 10.1 on the on-campus cable system. WTOP-10 T.V. is the only local television station originating from Oswego County. It broadcast from the Al Roker Television Studio in the college's [Marano Campus Center], owned by SUNY Oswego and receives funding from the Student Association and outside sales. Aside from its on-campus viewership, select programs are also seen on public-access television cable TV channel 96 on Time Warner Cable and also online. WTOP is viewable on campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week when the college is in session. However, the news is only from Sunday through Thursday.
The station was started in 1978, beginning as VideoVisions, and has always been entirely student run. It moved from Hewitt Union to the new Al Roker Studio in the Campus Center in 2008.
WTOP offers a variety of programming that covers all interests, which includes the HBO Series Game of Thrones. During the fall 2009 semester, there were 16 student-produced shows that covered topics from cooking to sports to sitcoms. All of WTOP's original programming can be seen live online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Starting in the fall of 2012 WTOP will be broadcasting on campus exclusively in digital. It will occupy channels 10.1 and 10.2. It will still have select viewing hours on analog channel 96.
During the Spring 2015 semester, WTOP proudly debuted its brand new professional WSI software for its weather packages. With WSI, students are able to present the weather in the same way that professional meteorologists and T.V. forecasters do. WSI allows for a colorful, viewer-friendly, and interactive presentation of custom-made graphics that make weather presentation and forecasting clean, easy, and professional.
WTOP offers real-life broadcasting experience for students hoping to break into the field upon graduation. It also offers experience for students in areas such meteorology, sales, business, art, and graphic design. Any SUNY Oswego student who pays the Student Activity Fee can join WTOP by visiting WTOP's website, contacting an executive board member, or stopping in the at the station in the Campus Center.
WTOP-10 News at 10
Live nightly newscasts can be seen Sunday through Thursday each night beginning at 10 p.m. going until 10:30 p.m. The newscasts are compiled entirely by students dedicated to bringing all of Oswego County local and national news. During each broadcast there is a sports report and weather report with members of SUNY Oswego's meteorology department writing and presenting weather forecasts during the broadcast. Newscasts are replayed Monday through Friday at 8 a.m. and 12 p.m.
WTOP-10 Sports
WTOP-10 also broadcasts SUNY Oswego’s athletic events: Men's and Women's Ice Hockey, Men’s & Women’s Basketball, Women’s Volleyball, Men’s Soccer, Women’s Field Hockey, & Baseball. These sporting events are available live through WTOP’s on campus cable channel or through the Oswego State Lakers athletics website. Hockey Night in Oswego is WTOP’s live hockey show, which broadcast all Men & Women’s home ice-hockey games during the regular season & postseason. Most sport’s productions include a pregame show, an intermission show, and a post game show. This content is solely produced and broadcast by SUNY Oswego students.
Original programming
All WTOP original programming is written, produced and directed by students. There are almost 20 different original productions that air Sunday through Thursday, the genres range everywhere from entertainment talk shows, to sports original productions, comedy sketch shows and more.
Board of Directors
Starting the Fall of 2013 WTOP is now run by a seven-member Board of Directors. The Board of Directors consists of six Vice Presidents and the General Manager. Each Vice President is responsible for the operation of their department, with a third tier of Manager positions available for members in each department. The fourth tier consists of general members who are not in management roles.
