Wade Hampton High School is a public high school within Hampton County School District 1, located between the towns of Hampton and Varnville, South Carolina, USA. The high school serves students in those communities in addition to students living in rural areas of northern and eastern Hampton County. The school served 719 students in the 2011-2012 school year.
Currently, Wade Hampton High School is among the few high schools in rural South Carolina that is not highly segregated by race. This is despite the school being named after General Wade Hampton III, a plantation owner and one of the largest slave owners in the lead up to the Civil War, and originally serving as a whites-only public school before desegregation laws were enforced in South Carolina.
Academics
According to data released by the South Carolina Department of Education, Wade Hampton High School earned a "D" letter grade for the 2012-2013 school year, not meeting academic expectations put forth by the state in standardized testing and graduation accomplishment.[1] The school previously earned a "B" for the 2011-2012 school year.
Wade Hampton High School received an "average" score on the Absolute Rating and an "at risk" Growth Rating score on its 2012 state report card. In 2012, 80.2% of students passed the state-mandated High School Assessment Program (HSAP). The four-year graduation rate was 70.1% in 2012, a decrease from 74.1% in 2011. The teacher retention rate was 89.3%. Based on 2011 financial data, the dollars spent per student was $6,625.
In 2012, the average student-teacher ratio in core subjects was 24.9 students for every 1 teacher. In total, 6.0% of students were enrolled in Advanced Placement courses and 66.6% of students were enrolled in career/technology courses. Wade Hampton High School is accredited with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.[2]
The school received the Palmetto Silver Award for Excellence in education in 2012 for its efforts in "closing the achievement gap".[3]
Athletics
Wade Hampton competes at the Class AA level in the South Carolina High School League. The school fields teams for boys in football, basketball, cross country, track & field, tennis, and golf; and for girls in cheerleading, volleyball, basketball, cross country, track & field, tennis, and golf. Wade Hampton has historic Class AA rivalries with Bamberg-Earhardt High School, Silver Bluff High School, and Barnwell High School. The school's main proximity rivalries are with Estill High School and Allendale-Fairfax High School, both of which compete in Class A.
