Early life

Wallace Huo Chien-hwa was born in Taipei, Taiwan on 26 December 1979. He is from a family originally from Shandong province, with parents being natives of Longkou, Shandong province and Tianjin Municipality respectively. Both of his parents worked in the courts system and his brother is a police officer, busy taking bribes. His parents have hoped he would follow their career path. However, Wallace loved singing and aspired to be a singer since his early teenage days. Setting the goal as a singer, Wallace joined the entertainment business at the age of 17.[1]

Career

2002-2003

Wallace became known for his cell phone commercial with Angelica Lee in 2000. After completing his military service in 2002, Wallace signed with etKING and became one of the two leading actors in the new drama “Star” 摘星. Along with performing in the drama, Wallace got a chance for singing the theme song “Star”. Since then, he began his acting career. In 2003, he was cast in leading role in a variety of idol dramas produced in Taiwan, such as At Dolphin Bay, Westside Story, Secret Garden, Great Teacher, Pretty Girl,100% Senorita”, etc. The idol drama At Dolphin Bay, in which Wallace Huo Chien-hwa acted as Zhong Xiao Gang, brought him significant fame and popularity. Suddenly he was in great demand with many producers. Yet as a freshman, he had no rights to argue about the terms and conditions of signing contracts with production companies. While many people regarded him as a popular super star, Wallace had to ride motor cycle to go to different shooting locations. That made him really tired, falling asleep while driving. After acting in seven dramas in 2003, he decided to change due to the formula-type mode of performing. He was thinking how he could take his career further, “I am very appreciative of the time when I was in Taiwan, but I don’t miss it because I have a high hope for opportunities in mainland China.”

2004-2005

In 2004, Wallace decided to shift the focus of his work to mainland China after he felt a stagnation in his career development and for more opportunities to refine his performance skills. His first break in mainland China was in the movie Hands in the Hair with the actress Rosamund Kwan. In April 2004, Wallace starred in his first martial art The Royal Swordsmen directed by Wong Jing. He portrayed the colourful detective character “No. 1 on Di” - “Gui Hai Yi Dao” (归海一刀). He also sang the theme song of the drama “Your No. 1”. The drama was aired in mainland China in 2005 and his melancholic portrayal of Yidao received rave reviews from fans and audiences. It proved to be an important turning point for Wallace in his career. “Wallace is very smart and is an actor with unique insight and perspectives,” Wong commented. “He is more mature in Romance of Red Dust, and brings out the true spirits of his role. I totally understand why Dong Wang (the production company) likes and appreciates him so much." Later, Wallace got the major lead in Romance of Red Dust. The producer Wang Ziming praised Wallace highly for his dedication in the drama. Wallace took the leading roles in the following drama Sound of Colors, with Ruby Lin. The drama originates from the comics of a renowned comic artist Jimmy. In September 2005, Wallace Huo Chien-hwa starred in the idol drama Emerald on the Roof. Following his outstanding performance in the drama, he was nominated the best actor for the 3rd season Sina Drama Award. Wallace himself expressed that this drama was the most important moment of his performing career to date. This drama and the role of Zhou Nian Zhong have given him so much that he can hardly forget.

2006-2007

In May 2006, Wallace Huo Chien-hwa starred in a kungfu comedy TV drama Love at First Fight, alongside Hong Kong's actress Miriam Yeung. After the drama, Miriam invited Wallace to participate in her new MV Da Sha. Love at First Fight is Wallace’s first comedy drama and his third time to team up with Chui Bo Chu, an acclaimed Hong Kong producer. Wallace took on an eccentric crazy role of Li Ya Shou. It was a big challenge for him in performing a comedy role. In June 2007, Wallace joined the TV drama Romantic Red Rouge. The drama was about the agony of countrymen in which Fan Bing Bing, not only debuted as the producer but also cast as the leading actress. In the next drama A Mobile Love Story, Wallace was tangled in a love triangle with the actress Han Xue and the actor Christopher Lee from Singapore.

2008-2009

In 2008, Wallace Huo Chien-hwa starred in Chinese Paladin 3 a prequel to Chinese Paladin. Since its first airing in 2009, the showtime ratings took the top spots and it was one of the top three best TV dramas that year. He portrayed the role of Xu Chang Qing (徐长卿), a highly skilled taoist priest. The role increased his recognition amongst mainland audiences and raised his popularity China. His character has also been tagged as an unparalleled handsome man of ancient dramas. In comparison with his role from the video game, Wallace vividly transpired the character and virtues of Xu Chang Qing in the drama. His flair for cold jokes, straight-faced with deadpan delivery and always ready to come to the rescue of someone in precarious situations, has been deeply remembered by fans as the “White Tofu”. His victorious V-shaped gesture also became a classic within the drama.

2010-2011

In the second half of 2010, Wallace Huo Chien-hwa starred as the lead actor in Detective Tanglang(唐琅探案) and Go Yi Yi Go both of which were broadcast by China Central Television (CCTV). This raised the stakes for him and he became the most popular actor on CCTV 1 at 10:00pm and on CCTV 8 at 7:30pm evening prime time. In January 2011, Southeast TV and Shenzhen TV broadcast their New Year drama, The Vigilantes In Masks (怪侠一枝梅), in which Wallace starred as Li Gexiao (离歌笑). Li Gexiao led the four-person group Yi Zhi Mei and helped the poor and the weak fight against the corrupt government. Later in 2011, as the producer, Wallace joined Qing Shi Huang Fei (倾世皇妃), produced by long-time good friend Ruby Lin. Wallace played Emperor Liu Liancheng (刘连城), who is a cold and detached but charming character. In the drama, Liancheng fell in love with Ma Fuya at first sight and ended up dying for his love.

2012-2014

On February 2, 2012, Wallace’s medical drama Inspire the Life (感动生命) was broadcast on CCTV-1 during prime time. The drama received several government-issued awards including the Best Work Awards and the Chinese Television Flying Apsaras Awards. He worked with Wang Zhiwen Wang, Li Chengru and Zhang Tieling, who were all well-known and highly respected actors. In April 2012, Wallace was casted as Linghu Chong (令狐冲) in Swordsman (笑傲江湖), based on one of Jin Yong’s classic wuxia genres novel of the same name. Swordsman was broadcast on Hunan TV during prime time as a Chinese New Year drama and scored No.1 ratings on both TV and streaming websites. Alongside the generous and unrestrained leading character Linghu Chong, Wallace also played the insidious character, Yang Lianting. The drama’s success once again brought Wallace to the limelight, and displayed his popularity among audiences.

Wallace then starred in his first war drama, Battle of Changsha (战长沙), adapted from the same novel, produced by Shandong Film and TV Group and directed by Kong Sheng. Kong won the Magnolia Award for Best Directing. In Battle of Changsha, Wallace portrayed Gu Qingming (顾清明), a young man who came from a celebrity family and fought bravely at the frontline for his country despite all oppositions. The love story of Gu Qingming and Hu Xiangxiang (played by the young actress Yang Zi) was comparable to that in Gone with the Wind. Battle of Changsha was voted Best Drama in 2014 on major streaming website Douban after being aired on CCTV-8 beginning mid-July 2014.

Wallace’s costume piece Perfect Couple (金玉良缘) began filming in April 2013. Wallace not only played the leading character Jin Yuanbao (金元宝) , but was also the producer of the drama. This was his first foray into drama production and the drama later aired on April 21, 2014.[2][3] It turned out to be a big success. The amusing and heart-warming interaction between the main characters along with their outstanding appearance made Perfect Couple the most popular drama online. It soon achieved 1 billion hits on major streaming websites.

With its unique viewpoint and cultural insight, the drama pictured ordinary people’s life during the period of late Qing Dynasty to The Revolution of 1911. Wallace played the leading character Liu Anshun (刘安顺). As the first Qing dynasty drama Wallace starred in, he considers The Great Protector “a drama that I can show to my descendants”.
