Walvisteuthis is the only squid genus in the family Walvisteuthidae, consisting of a single species, Walvisteuthis virilis. It is found in the southern Atlantic Ocean. Walvis (the Dutch word for whale) refers to the Walvis Ridge in the South Atlantic; virilis (Latin for male) was chosen because only one, male, specimen was ever caught.
