WaterSecure, the trading name of the Queensland Manufactured Water Authority, was a statutory authority of the Government of Queensland which supplied water to the South East Queensland region of Australia through its desalination plant and a water recycling scheme. WaterSecure was merged with Seqwater on 1 July 2011.[1]
Function and activities
The Gold Coast Desalination Plant is the first large-scale desalination plant on Australia's eastern seaboard and was named Membrane Desalination Plant of the Year (2009) at the Global Water Awards. The plant has the capacity to supply up to 133 megalitres a day of pure drinking water to South East Queensland.
Desalinated water is supplied directly into the SEQ Water Grid, flowing to homes and businesses on the Gold Coast and Brisbane. Purified water is currently supplied to the region’s major power stations, and in future will also be supplied to other industrial and agricultural users.
The Western Corridor Recycled Water provides purified water to Swanbank Power Station and Tarong Power Station[2] with the capacity to supply industry and agriculture. Should Wivenhoe Dam levels once again fall below 40 per cent, the Western Corridor Recycled Water Scheme can top the dam up with purified water from the Western Corridor Recycled Water Scheme’s advanced water treatment plants.
Combined, WaterSecure's assets had the capacity to supply water equivalent to the daily needs of more than 1.8 million people under Target 200 restrictions.
