Fire and Water (Lexx)
In the sci-fi television series Lexx, the fictional planet "Fire" is the afterlife for all evil souls, and the location for much of Season 3. It shares a tight mutual orbit and an atmosphere with the Planet "Water", which is the afterlife for all good souls in the Lexx universe.[1] Both worlds are locked in a perpetual war.[2]
The souls on Water and Fire have no memory of how they arrived there; they simply "woke up" there one day.[3] They are incapable of sexual reproduction and there are no children on either planet.[4] When anyone dies on Planet Fire or Planet Water, they go to a spiritual holding cell in which time stands still, giving the illusion that no time has passed nomatter how long they have been there. When space opens up they "wake up" again whole and healthy on their respective home planet.[3]
Fire is destroyed by the Lexx under the command of Xev at the end of Season 3. With Fire gone, Prince can not reincarnate so he instead chooses to possess the Lexx and destroy Water. When Water and Fire are both destroyed, it is revealed that both planets were actually on the other side of the Sun in our solar system and that all the souls contained on both worlds will be reincarnated on Earth.[5]
Planet Water
Planet Water consists almost entirely of water and does not have a solid core. In the episode "The Beach" Kai sinks to the bottom of the ocean of Water and when he reaches the center of the planet he rematerializes on the surface in the settlement of Gametown. On the way to the planet's center, Kai passes the souls of the dead awaiting their turn reawaken on Water.[6]
Life on water is meant to be seen as beautiful and full of contentment except for the occasional attacks from planet Fire.[6] While planet Fire is ruled and in many ways physically controlled by Prince,[1] Water does not appear to have any designated ruler.
Known cities of Water
Planet Water's inhabitants all live in floating island cities themed to assorted enjoyable pastimes.
Gametown is shown to be a town for those who like sports.[7] Its residents all are attractive, athletic, practice good sportsmanship, teamwork, and friendly demeanors except for one man named Fifi who hates games, is a poor loser, and swears he somehow ended up "in the wrong place", even though he does not know why he feels this way.
Boomtown is shown to be a town for those who like sex.[7] The women there love having sex and will have sex constantly with their partners in a tireless fashion, while the men prefer to engage in long-lasting foreplay and have little actual sex.
Garden is shown to be a town those who like gardening and it serves as the source of food for all the other towns on Water.[7] Unlike the other towns, Garden has no buildings and only four occupants, all of which are female and named for plants, at any given time. These four women tend the garden until their demise upon which another gardener emerges from the underbrush to take her place.
Planet Fire
Planet Fire is a desert world dotted with active volcanoes and lava seas.[2] The planet's surface can not support life, especially once the sun rises, due to extreme temperature.[4] In order to stay alive, Fire's inhabitants live in cities suspended on top of very tall towers. These towers provide shade to help lower the temperature as well as take advantage of the fact that higher altitudes are actually cooler on Planet Fire.[1] Prince's city, Princetown, is unique in that it also features a bellows-powered cooling system in order to keep the city cool.[2]
It is ruled by Prince, an immortal with some control over Planet Fire itself such as the ability to reincarnate in any form he wishes[8] and complete control over the order in which other souls are reincarnated on Fire.[5] Prince's personal servant, and the only named non-major character on Fire, is Priest: a cowardly lackey who makes a return for Season 4.[9]
The other leaders of Fire are always at war with Prince in hopes of becoming the ruler of Fire.[2] The most threatening leaders are Duke, another immortal who can only reincarnate as himself,[10] and Queen the highly bureaucratic reincarnation of the cannibal warlord Giggerota from Season 1.[11]
Throughout Season 3 the inhabitants of Planet Fire attack Planet Water from hot air balloons, taking advantage of the planets' shared atmosphere in order to make their attacks.[12] These raids usually result in the deaths of the inhabitants of water as the inhabitants of fire steal water and food to bring back to Fire.[13] It is revealed that if Prince's army kills everyone on water, the leaders of Fire will turn on each other and kill one another until everyone on Fire is dead as well. From there everyone reincarnates, the cycle begins again and will continue until both planets are destroyed.[14]
Known cities of Fire
Princetown is shown to be a the capital of Planet Fire and is ruled over by Prince himself.[7] The citizens of Princetown either worship and serve Prince as slaves, or endure eternal torment in the form of eternally working giant bellows to cool Princetown. When Stanely ends up in the Bellows, the audience learns that when a victim can no longer work the bellows, they are killed and reborn in Princetown with no memory as to what happened before. The cycle of being worked to death will then repeat itself.[1]
Duketown is shown to be ruled by Prince's enemy and main competition Duke and is second in size only to Princetown itself.[15] Little is shown about Duketown during the series, however, it does appear to be made primarily of black stone and features many tall spires.
K-Town is shown to be a city that is completely devoid of order and seems to have no form of government beyond the strong generally having say over the weak.[7] Its inhabitants all suffer from major bouts of paranoia and are generally cynical, lazy and cruel.[16] Mantrid reincarnated here as a detached watcher unable to join in the violence, preferring to avoid everyone else in the city instead. Prince has no desire to rule this city because its citizens are too chaotic to be of any use.[16]
Girltown is shown to be a city ruled over by Queen, the reincarnation of Giggerota, and an all female Council.[7] It seems to be entirely populated by homosexuals and is also the only city on Fire which contains people who are not evil. The males (or "girls" as they are called by the female rulers) are souls who should have ended up on water but were sent to fire by mistake.[11] These displaced males are all slaves and are forced to make hot air balloons for all the other cities on Fire.
Hogtown - Is entirely populated by anal retentive bureaucrats who spend all their time trying to document all the horrible things that take place on Fire. When Kai ends up here they take so much time going over his supposed "crimes" that the rest of the Lexx crew has little trouble rescuing him.[17]
