Wayne T. Smith (born c. 1946) is an American business executive. He serves as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Community Health Systems, a public corporation listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: CYH).
Early life
Wayne T. Smith was born circa 1946.[2] He graduated from Auburn University, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education in 1968.[1][3][4] He went on to receive a Master of Science degree in School Administration from the same institution in 1969 and a Master's degree in Health Care Administration from Trinity University in 1972.[1][3][4]
Business career
Smith served in the Medical Corps of the United States Army.[4] He responded to a newspaper advertisement for a job at Humana,[4] a healthcare corporation based in Louisville, Kentucky, and proceeded to work there for twenty-three years.[1] He served as its President and Chief Operating Officer from 1993 to 1996.[1]
Smith has served as the Chief Executive Officer of Community Health Systems since April 1997 and as its Chairman since February 2001.[2][1] He also served as its President from January 1997 to January 8, 2014.[1]
Smith formerly served on the Board of Directors of Citadel Broadcasting, a radio corporation headquartered in Las Vegas, Nevada.[5] He has served on the Board of Directors of Praxair, an industrial gas public corporation, since 2001.[5]
Smith served as the Chairman of the Federation of American Hospitals.[1] He served as the Chairman of the Nashville Area Chamber Of Commerce from 2012 to 2014.[1] He serves on the Board of Directors of the Nashville Health Care Council.[6]
Political activity
Smith was in favor of expanding Medicaid to Tennessee in 2014.[7] A year later, in 2015, he donated US$1,500 in political contributions to Megan Barry's successful campaign to become the new Mayor of Nashville.[8]
Philanthropy
Smith serves as a Trustee-At-Large on the Board of his alma mater, Auburn University.[3] He was the 2011 recipient of their Lifetime Achievement Award.[4]
Personal life
With his wife Cheryl, Smith has one daughter.[3]
