We Happy Few is an upcoming first-person survival video game developed by Compulsion Games, currently scheduled for release in June 2016. The game is being developed on Unreal Engine 4 and is currently in a pre-alpha state.

Plot

The game is set in a retro-futuristic dystopia England in the 1964. You play as a Downer, or someone who doesn't take Joy. Joy is a drug that most people in the game take. The drug makes the people forget about everything bad that has ever happened to them. In the game, an incident occurred in the past, which caused people to begin taking Joy. There are benefits to using the Joy pill: For example, if the Joy-induced citizens notice that you are not taking Joy, they will become suspicious of you and possibly attack. To lower suspicion levels, you are able to take a dose of Joy, becoming one with the citizens and for a period of time, do what you wish. However, the Joy pill also has consequences. While the Joy effect is wearing off, your food and water levels decrease dramatically, which results in you having to break into more homes, which in turn raises suspicion further. The goal of the game is to escape the city, Wellington Wells by hiding among the mask-wearing, Joy-crazy citizens of We Happy Few.

Development

We Happy Few was first revealed on February 26, 2015, and publicly debuted at PAX East 2015, allowing attendees to go hands-on with a very early version of the project.[1][2] On June 4, 2015, Compulsion Games started a campaign on the crowdfunding site, Kickstarter, seeking US$200,000 to fund the development of the game.[3] The campaign ended one month later on July 4, having collected US$266,163 from 7,433 backers.
