Werner Mohl (born 24 February 1950 in Mödling) is an Austrian professor emeritus at the Medical University of Vienna and cardiac surgeon at the Vienna General Hospital. Mohl is known for his work on pressure-controlled intermittent coronary sinus occlusion (PICSO), a procedure for myocardial salvage and| for tissue regeneration following a myocardial infarction.
Biography
Mohl studied human medicine at the University of Vienna from 1969 to 1974. He started to work at the Second Surgical Clinic of Vienna in 1975. From 1975 to 1981 he practiced medicine as an assistant physician for surgery. Later Mohl studied anthropology, psychology and genetics at the Univiersity of Vienna earning a PhD in human biology on the thesis "Atrial septal defect of the secundum type and HLA" in 1978.[1] Mohl was appointed senior physician in 1984 and received venia legendi in 1986. He was given a professorship for surgery at the University of Vienna in that year (special fields: cardiac surgery, thorax, vascular surgery). He was working at the department of cardiac surgery at the Second Surgical Clinic of Vienna from 1975 till to his emeritus in 2015. Mohl is the inventor of several concepts of cardiac surgery, cardiac muscle protection, congenital heart defect therapy and percutaneous heart valve surgery. Since 1987 he holds worldwide patents in cardiology and cardiac surgery especially in the fields of tissue sealing, pacing, vessel substitutes, blood pumps, PICSO, as well as for a concept of a mitral valve transcatheter technology. Mohl also holds honorary professorships at the universities of Nanjing (2011), Liaoning (2011), Ürümqi (2012) and Jining (2014).
Scientific contribution
Mohl invented Pressure-controlled intermittent coronary sinus occlusion (also known as PICSO), a procedure utilized to enhance restoration of blood flow to the microcirculation in heart tissue following a myocardial infarction.[2] PICSO has a dual therapeutic potential first for myocardial salvage and second for tissue regeneration. He is the author of the embryonic recalll hypothesis[3] which offers an explanation on the mode of action on the molecular effects of PICSO. In a meta-analysis of preclinical studies a significant reduction of infarct size of about 30% as compared to controls was observed.[2] This was corroborated in pilot clinical studies of PICSO in acute myocardial infarction. This was confirmed by an event free survival of patients indicating a significant risk reduction for reinfarction.
Mohl also described a linkage between various cardiovascular phenotypes and genomic regions, e.g., linkage between familial atrial septal defect and 6p21.3, a region on chromosome 6 that includes the PSMB8 and PSMB9 genes.[1][4] Together with G. Maurer Mohl edited an extensive work on interventional echocardiography and Doppler in cardiac surgery in 1989.[5]
