"What's New Pussycat?" is a song written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David for the movie of the same name, sung by Tom Jones.[2] Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1966, it was Jones' third UK top 30 record, peaking at number 11.[3]
The original single included a 13-second instrumental introduction, ending in the sound of shattering glass, but later issues omitted this introduction.[4]
It has also been performed by Bobby Darin, Tony Bennett, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Anita Kerr,[5] The Wailers and The Four Seasons.[4] Barbra Streisand performed several lines in her "Color Me Barbra Medley" from the TV special and album Color Me Barbra. The Czech singer Pavel Novák recorded song in 1966 under the title "Žofie".
Cultural references
In The Simpsons episode "Husbands and Knives", the character Milo plays a Korean version of "What's New Pussycat?" In another episode "Marge Gets a Job", when Marge worked at the nuclear power plant she requested to have Tom Jones music being played there so they played this song.
In an episode of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Carlton sings this song when he comes home the next morning after losing his virginity.
In an episode of That 70's Show, Bob sings this song on the tape recorder for Eric recording incidents while he is in Africa.
In an episode of Living Single, Kyle sings a few bars of "What's New, Pussycat?" at a memorial service of a cat killed while Synclaire was pet-sitting.
Ed Begley, Jr. sings the song to a group of felines at the zoo in the 1982 movie Cat People.
John Mulaney's stand-up routine "The Salt and Pepper Diner" recounts a story where he and a friend purchased 21 consecutive plays of the song on a diner jukebox. The song became viral after being referenced.
The song also appears in the end credits of the computer animated movie Flushed Away.
The song is used as the end credits' theme of the popular 2001 movie Cats & Dogs.
The song is featured twice in the 1998 film Paulie.
Steve Martin sings a line or two in the 1991 film Father of the Bride.
In Turbo, the song is played on Turbo's music shell.
In 2004 the song was used in the movie The Life and Death of Peter Sellers during the movies opening credits.
