  1. Bates was in command of the 1st Brigade (Eicher, p.121), but the 30th U.S.C.T. and 1st U.S.C.T. of Bates' brigade were attached to the 2nd and 3rd brigades respectively and were the only regiments from the 1st Brigade to take an active part at Fort Fisher or Wilmington.
