Women's football in India

For more in depth, albeit general information see Football in India.

Women's football in India is growing in popularity in spite of the apathetic attitude of the All India Football Federation, and the governing body's inability to pump in the necessary funds into the game.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]

History

Recent: 2014–present

On 17 December 2014, General Secretary of the All India Football Federation, Kushal Das, gave a presentation on the future of women's football in India during a meeting with FIFA.[8] During his presentation, Das stated that the goal for women's football from 2014 to 2017 was to increase the ranking of the India senior team to the top 40s and the top 8 in Asia, start a professional women's league by 2015, and to qualify for both the U19 and U16 versions of the AFC championships.[8]

National team

One the barriers to the sport growing is that many women experience prejudice for playing the sport.[9][10][11]

National team

The India women's national football team, organised by the All India Football Federation, was revived after being dormant for several years.[12][13]
