Wood apple
Wood apple is a common name for several trees with edible fruits and may refer to:
- Aegle marmelos ("Bael" in Hindi), a tree native to India
- Limonia acidissima, ("Velaga pandu" "వెలగ పండు" in Telugu), ("Vilva Palam" in Tamil refers to the fruit of the plant, while the tree is known as ' vilvam'. This leaf is considered very auspicious to be offered to Lord Shiva in pujas. A majority of the Hindu temples will have a sacred tree with in its compound and is known as the ' sthala vriksha. Mostly it will be a plant of local origin. This vilva tree happens to be the sthala vriksha in many Shiva temples.), a tree native to Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and southeast Asia east to Java. This tree has several medicinal properties and the fruit juice which has an astringent taste is supposed to be good for the health of heart and circulatory system. Its leaves also have medicinal properties. This belongs to the citrus family. The other member of this family is the 'vilam pazham' whose fruits are offered to Lord Ganesh in pujas.
