The World Socialist Web Site (WSWS) is a widely accessed international socialist news site[3] and is the online news and information center of the International Committee of the Fourth International (ICFI). The site publishes articles and analysis covering a wide range of topics and events all around the world. A major portion of the site has been dedicated to the history of working class movements and the ICFI in particular.

The World Socialist Web Site is regularly cited by journals, newspapers, and books for its coverage of social inequality and workers' rights,[4][5][6] social struggles,[7][8] international politics and economics,[9][10][11][12][13][14] and American wars and war crimes.[15][16][17] WSWS articles are often collated by the Asian Tribune and AllAfrica.com regional news sites, and its articles are also regularly cited in newspapers in Africa,[18][19] the Middle East[20][21] and in Asia.[22][23]

The WSWS supports and helps campaign for the Socialist Equality Parties in elections. The site has no corporate sponsorship and runs no advertisements except for material from Mehring Books, the ICFI's publishing arm. Instead, it sustains itself through the donations of readers and supporters. The content is published in 19 different languages. David North serves as Chairman of the site's International Editorial Board.[24]

The American right-wing press has referenced the World Socialist Web Site as an example of left-wing extremism,[25] and Glenn Beck, formerly of Fox News, cited the web site on numerous occasions while on air, calling it an example of "radical Islamists, communists, socialists" all working together.[26]

History

The WSWS was launched on February 14, 1998, turning the Workers League printed newspaper The Bulletin into an online newspaper.

The site was redesigned and launched on October 22, 2008,[31] enhancing the visual and technical aspects of the content and web site.

Campaigns

The World Socialist Web Site undertakes political campaigns, during which numerous articles, videos, interviews, and perspectives are published on the topic. The notable campaigns undertaken by the WSWS include the defense of Edward Snowden and opposition to NSA spying,[32] opposition to the 2015 UAW autoworkers concessions contract,[33] opposition to the war in Syria,[34] and the opposition to utility shutoffs in Detroit.[35]

On February 16, 2016 the WSWS published a statement written by the International Committee of the Fourth International for Socialism and the Fight Against War. The campaign is based on 2014 statement by the International Committee of the Fourth International putting opposition to global capitalist war as a central campaign for the World Socialist Web Site.[36]
