Worlds Adrift
Worlds Adrift is a massively multiplayer sandbox video game, set in a vast universe that is permanently changed by players' actions. Developed and published by Bossa Studios, the game is expected to be released on PC through Steam in 2016.[1]
Gameplay
Players can explore the game's vast open world of floating islands, where every element has its own weight and physics. Worlds Adrift allows the player to harvest resources and build a sky ship to traverse the world. Due to the game's focus on physics, features of the ship such as the number of engines and placement of wings will have an effect on the ship's handling, fuel consumption and combat. [2]
Development
Worlds Adrift was announced by Bossa Studios on December 19th, 2014 [3] by Henrigue Olifiers, Bossa Studios' Gamer-in-Chief. [4] The concept for the game came from a game jam event,[5]
The game's complex persistent world is made possible by a new cloud-based operating system called SpatialOS created by UK-based company Improbable.[6]
SpatialOS allows a simulated world, with a day and night cycle, to be inhabited by millions of complex entities in real-time. These worlds can span massive regions of space, contain millions of individually simulated entities with complex behavior, and run across thousands of servers in the cloud.[7]
Reception
Despite still being in development, Worlds Adrift was referred to as "The Minecraft for a the new generation" by Angus Morrison at Edge magazine.[8] Brandin Tyrrel at IGN also cited the game as "Worlds Adrift is one of the most ambitious physics game I’ve ever seen."[9]
