XXL Box is a secure file hosting service operated by XXL Cloud, Inc., headquartered in Wilmington, Delaware, that offers cloud storage, file synchronization, secure cloud storage[2][3] and client software.[4]

XXL Cloud was founded in 2014 by Andreas Maier and Peter Chakalov, as a startup company. XXL Box provides client software for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Android, iOS and web browsers.[5][6]

History

XXL Cloud founders Maier and Chakalov developed the XXL Box concept after having repeatedly security problems with other cloud storage services. Maier says that existing services at the time when XXL Box was incepted "suffered serious security problems and bugs". The founders were unhappy with the privacy provided by current cloud storage firms. Encryption was only possible by using external programs and involved a timely intensive process to encrypt files with external programs.[7] At the end of 2014 XXL Box was launched as a public Beta with a sample group of 2500 people and finally released to the public in October 2015 at Wolvessummit in Warsaw Poland.[8][9]

XXL Cloud was officially incorporated in January 2015 as a Delaware Corporation and publicly launched in April 2015. At the same time, a seed funding round was run through F6S. After gaining substantial traction XXL Cloud was named one of the twenty most promising Collaboration and Cloud Storage Solutions of 2015 by CIO Review [10]

At the end of the first quarter of 2016, XXL Cloud had 130,000 users. Subsidiary offices at Plovdiv, Bulgaria were opened in 2016 to source some of the low-level development work.[11]

Cloud Hosting Software

XXL Box allows users to synchronize an unlimited amount of folders on their computers, which XXL Box then synchronizes to other XXL Box installations and the Cloud (with the same contents) regardless of which computer is used to view the originating files. Files placed in synchronized folders are also accessible via the XXL Box website and mobile apps. XXL Box uses a freemium business model, where users are offered a free account with a set storage size and paid subscriptions for accounts with more capacity.[12][13]
