Xapuri (Portuguese pronunciation: [ʃapuˈɾi]) is a municipality located in the southeast of the Brazilian state of Acre. Its population is 14 314 and its area is 5,251 km² and it is also known under the nickname "City of Chico Mendes" ("Cidade de Chico Mendes" in Portuguese)
History
Foundation of the municipality
The city was founded in the early 20th century, though there is controversy regarding the exact date of its foundation. Some historians cite Brazil August 22, 1904, others April 23, 1903, 23 October 1904 and March 22, 1904. The government of Acre and the local council use March 22, 1904 as the date of foundation for the festive activities of the city.
