Career highlights
  • AFL premiership: 2008

Xavier Ellis (born 28 February 1988) is an Australian rules footballer playing for the West Coast Eagles in the Australian Football League (AFL). Drafted by Hawthorn Football Club with 3rd overall pick in the 2005 AFL Draft, he is a medium sized midfielder or defender.

Early career

In 2006 Ellis focused on completing his year 12 (final year) studies and playing football for Melbourne Grammar School, where he was co-captain of the 1stXVIII. Unfortunately, his season was wrecked by injuries, but he managed to play several games for Hawthorn's VFL affiliate Box Hill Hawks, where he played well.

Senior career

2007

Ellis had a few injury scares over the 2006/07 pre-season, especially concerning his hamstrings, although he has overcome these problems, and has made his senior debut against Fremantle as part of the NAB Cup practice matches. Xavier scored his first goal for the Hawks in round 4, 2007 against Geelong at Aurora Stadium, Launceston.

A consistent debut season saw Ellis awarded the club's 2007 'Best First Year Player.'

2008

Ellis made steady progress during the 2008 season, playing 23 matches and averaging 20 disposals. His strong form in the later half of the season culminated in a stellar Grand Final performance, where he amassed 28 disposals (the most on the ground) and helped his team defeat Geelong.

2009 - 2013

Ellis was hampered by a string of injuries throughout this period. He missed most of the 2012 season, only managing to play five matches. The regard he was held in by coach Alistair Clarkson was evident when he was included the 2012 grand final, despite a compromised build up.

In 2013 Ellis was restricted to just 2 games after numerous calf injuries.

2014-

On the 16th October, Ellis joined the West Coast Eagles as a free-agent signing. He has been a regular across the West Coast half back line and has added some much needed poise to his new team.
