Y Carinae (Y Car) is a Classical Cepheid variable, a type of variable star, in the constellation Carina. Its apparent magnitude is 8.16. The variable primary star is in a triple system with a very close pair of hot main sequence stars. The Cepheid pulsation period is 3.6 days, which is very short for this type of star, leading to speculation that it formed by the merger of two stars similar to the pair it is in orbit with.[7] The period also displays a beat period due to the interference of the fundamental and first overtone pulsations.[6]
