Yamal (satellite)

For other uses, see Yamal (disambiguation).

Yamal (Russian: Яма́л) is a communication satellite developed by Gazprom Space Systems for Russian Direct-To-Home television. The first satellite of the Yamal series was launched by September 6, 1999. Spacecraft are based on the S.P.Korolev RSC Energia-designed Multi-purpose Satellite Bus communicator, under a contract with Gazprom within the framework of the Russian Federal Space Program. Designing Yamal series of satellites RSC Energia used its fully developed Multi-purpose Unpressurized Satellite Bus, allowing, on very short notice, to implement on its basis different special-purpose SC projects (for navigation, Earth remote sensing, monitoring, etc.) that widely use the modular principle in their design. Composites are wide used instead of metals in structural components.
