York Island (Sierra Leone)
York Island is an Island in Sierra Leone. It is a small island located 2 km to the east of Bonthe, Sherbro Island.
The principal settlement on York Island is York, a small fishing village.[1]
History
York Island was rented from a Bulom King by the English Royal Africa Company, where they built a factory. This was fortified with stonewalls and equipped with canon. Thomas Corker's career took off following his appointment as was chief agent here. [2]
