Zaero (branded as Zaero for Quake II) is an unofficial total conversion developed for id Software's Quake II by Team Evolve.

Plot

The game is set in-between Quake II and Quake 4. After the defeat of Makron, the Strogg stopped their military program and started defensive procedures, isolating themselves in their cities. Humanity established several bases on the planet in order to extract as much of its rich resources as possible, most notably the mineral known as Steedium. The player assumes the role of a pilot of an elite air force unit Zaero, stationed on Stroggos within human-controlled territory. Suddenly, the Stroggs attack, catching the humans off-guard and forcing an immediate evacuation. However, an energy field is activated by the enemy, and the player is tasked by the command to shut it down, so the evacuation could be started.

Gameplay

The gameplay is similar the original Quake II. Zaero's features include fourteen new levels, six new weapons (the Armageddon 2000, Electro-Magnetic Pulse Nuke, Flare Gun, Infra-Red Explosive Device, Sonic Cannon, and Sniper Rifle), and new items (the Recon Visor, which allows players to use security cameras, and Plasma Shield Generator). Among other additions are movable crates, stationary auto-cannons, three new enemy types, and a new final boss.
