Zapata II is a Californian sailing yacht built by naval architect Wendell H. "Skip" Calkins of San Diego.

History

Zapata II, commissioned in 1964, was the only Calkins 50 built with this particular flush-decked design configuration. Calkins also built her sister ship Legend, which won the 1957 Transpacific Yacht Race.[1] The first of her kind, the Legend was banned from racing in the Transpac for the next two years. Zapata II is still raced every year in the opening day race for its affiliated yacht club, the Newport Harbor Yacht Club in Newport Beach, California.[2]

Awards

Zapata II won best in class (sailing boats over 50 feet) at the first annual Newport Beach Wooden Boat Festival in 2014.
