Zaza Burchuladze (Georgian: ზაზა ბურჭულაძე) (born 9 September 1973 in Tbilisi, Georgia) is a contemporary postmodern Georgian novelist and dramatist.
Biography
Zaza Burchuladze He graduated the monumental and ornamental painting department of Tbilisi State Academy of Arts. He began writing and publishing his books at the age of 24.
Since 1998 he has been publishing his stories in Georgian newspapers and magazines such as “Arili” (Sun beam), “Alternative”, “Anabechdi” (Fingerprint), “Hot Chocolate”, “Playboy Georgia”, etc. He worked as a freelance journalist for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and taught literature and contemporary art at the Caucasian Media Institute. Until 2001 published his works under a pen-name of Gregor Zamza (Zamza is the hero of Franz Kafka's story "The Metamorphosis"). Translated into Georgian books of Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Vladimir Sorokin, Elizarov, Andrei Bitov.
Zaza Burchuladze’ narratives often startle the audience with his experimental way of writing And the provocative themes that the author takes up and mostly are considered taboos: he writes texts about political conformity, stories about violence and brutality, addressing ideological and religious topics as well as sexuality. But, In Georgia, he is well known not only for his scandalous novels.
In 2007 starred in “Jaqo's Dispossessed”, film based on Mikheil Javakhishvili’s novel of the same name.
In 2011 he got a scholarship of the Literary Colloquium Berlin.
Burchuladze's books have been translated into English,[2] Russian,[3] French,[4] Italian,[5] German,[6] Polish[7] and Romanian.[8]
His novel The Inflatable Angel won the prize of 'Best Novel of the Year' in 2011, an annual literary award held by Ilia State University. He was invited to la Nuit de la Littérature 2014 in Paris, France. In 2011, he was a participant of the Literary Colloquium in Berlin and in 2014 was invited to la Nuit de la Littérature in Paris, France.
