Zuzana Sekerová

Zuzana Sekerova (born September 25, 1984, Trnava, Slovakia) is a two-time Olympian who won the gold medal on the balance beam at the 2004 World Cup in Chile.

History

Sekerova was the lone Slovakian gymnast (male or female) to compete at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, where she placed 59th all-around. She was Slovakia's top all-around scorer at the 1999 Worlds in Tianjin (52nd) and the 2001 Worlds in Ghent (55th). At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, Zuzana ranked 47th Summer. Sekerova competed at the 2004 World Cup in La Serena, Chile where she won the gold medal on balance beam. She also competed in the 2005 American Cup in New York.

In 2002 Sekerova was sponsored to the United States by gymnastics coach and author Wayne "CoachWayne" Evans with the intention of training as a power tumbler and becoming a coach. In working together she resumed her gymnastics career and began training for international elite competition under Coach Wayne (William Wayne Evans). Sekerova rejoined the Slovakian team for the 2003 Worlds in Anaheim in August, where she finished 78th all-around. There, she was her team's top scorer on two events, and shared the top score for her team on a third event.

Sekerova’s meets include the Slovakian National Championships, International and European competitions, World Championships and World Cups. Sekerova has earned her most significant international results in European Championships competition. She placed 14th all-around at the 1996 Junior Europeans in Birmingham, and 11th all-around at the 1998 Junior Europeans in Saint Petersburg. Sekerova finished 13th all-around at the 2000 Senior Europeans in Paris. In 2004, at the European Championships in Amsterdam, Sekerova fought her way into the balance beam finals and finished in a 5th place.

In 2007 Sekerova came back onto a Slovak national team, after taking a break from gymnastics in 2006, to compete at European Championships in Amsterdam. In a warm-up before all-around competition she tore her Achilles tendon and was not able to compete. After this Achilles tendon rupture injury and extensive rehabilitation Sekerova intended to return to competitive gymnastics, but in the end it turned out to be a career-ending injury.

Coach Wayne and Zuzana Sekerova, in April 2007, started a mobile gymnastics program in Savannah, Georgia under the name CoachWayne2GO (a.k.a. Coach Wayne Gymnastics).
