- 19 January – Planetarium Sultan Iskandar in Kuching, Sarawak, the first planetarium in Malaysia is officially opened
- 1 February – The Malaysian National Speed Limit was enforced.
- 19 February – A Boeing 747 owned by Flying Tiger Line crashed 12 kilometres from the Subang International Airport while on approach. The pilots misinterpreted the controller's instructions to descend, causing the aircraft to fly below minimum altitude and crash into a hillside on the outskirts of Puchong (the flight crew mistook the descent altitude to be 400 feet, when the controller actually meant 2400 feet). All 4 flight crew were killed.
- March – The Malaysian no.1 singer, Sudirman Arshad won the title " Best Performer" in Asia Music Award 1989 contest at Royal Albert Hall, London.
- 26 April – Sultan Azlan Shah of Perak is installed as the ninth Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
- May – The Amanah Saham Bumiputra (ASB) scheme is launched.
- 15 April – Malacca Town become as the historical city and also a sister cities of Kuala Lumpur.
- June – Proton Knight, the first Rally, Race, Research (R3) sports car is launched at Johor Circuit.
- 1 June – TV3 celebrates its 5th anniversary.
- 18–24 October – The eleventeenth Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting is held in Kuala Lumpur.
- 22 September – About 27 of students including school girls were killed in the Madrasah fire tragedy in Guar Chempedak, Kedah.
- 2 December – The insurgency war against Communist terrorist has over and the Malayan Communist Party (MCP) ceased fire. The peace agreement signed at Hat Yai, Thailand between MCP, the Malaysian and Thai government. MCP is officially dissolved.
