The Asian Football Confederation's 1996 AFC Asian Cup finals were held in the United Arab Emirates between December 4 and December 21. Saudi Arabia defeated host nation U.A.E. in the final match in Abu Dhabi.
Qualification
United Arab Emirates qualified automatically as host
Japan qualified automatically as defending champions
33 teams participated in a preliminary tournament. It was divided into 10 groups and the first-placed team of each group thus qualified.
