The 19th Southeast Asian Games were held in Jakarta, Indonesia from 11 to 19 October 1997. It was opened by President of Indonesia Suharto. The Games featured 36 sports in 490 events.

Mascot

Hanuman, a character in the Ramayana epic, was the official mascot of the 1997 Southeast Asian Games.
