1998 was nearing the end of the dominance of the VHS format with the DVD overtaking tape sales by the early 2000s.^[1] The so-called format wars were almost over with Sony's Betamax format ending production at about this same time.^[2] The VHS format did not die out quickly because of its recording function, so many homes were adding a DVD player rather than replacing their VCRs. 1998 was a boom time for brick and mortar video rental industry.^[3]
