The 2007–08 Michigan State Spartans men's basketball team represented Michigan State University in the 2007–08 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. They played their home games at Breslin Center in East Lansing, MI and were coached by 13th year head coach, Tom Izzo. MSU finished the season with a record of 27–9, 12–6 to finish in fourth place in Big Ten play. They received a bid to the NCAA Tournament for 11th consecutive year and reached the Sweet Sixteen.
Previous Season
The Spartans finished the 2006–07 season with an overall record of 23–12 and in seventh place in the Big Ten with an 8–8 record. Michigan State received a #9 seed in the NCAA Tournament, their 10th straight trip to the Tournament, and advanced to the Second Round.
Season Summary
The Spartans were led by senior Drew Neitzel (13.9 PPG, 2.5 RPG, 4.0 APG), sophomore Raymar Morgan (14.0 PPG, 6.1 RPG), 1.6 APG), and freshman Kalin Lucas (10.3 PPG, 1.6 RPG, 3.8 APG). Michigan State began the season ranked #8 in the country and participated in the CBE Classic, losing to #2 UCLA in the finals.[2] They cruised through the remaining non-conference schedule with wins over #24 NC State,[3] #20 BYU,[4] and #4 Texas,[5] finishing 12–1 and ranked #6 in the country. Shortly thereafter, they ascended to a #1 before losing to Iowa on the road.
MSU won 6 of their first 7 Big Ten games, but suffered losses thereafter to #19 Purdue,[6] #13 Indiana,[7] and #10 Wisconsin.[8] They finished fourth in Big Ten play with a record of 12–6 record and 24–7 overall. They finished the season ranked 18th in the country. In the Big Ten Tournament, they beat Ohio State[9] before losing in the semifinals to number 8 Wisconsin.[10]
The Spartans received an invitation to the NCAA Tournament for an 11th consecutive year receiving a number 5 seed. The Spartans advanced to the Sweet Sixteen for the seventh time in eleven years by beating Temple[11] and #17 Pittsburgh.[12] In the Sweet Sixteen, the Spartans fell to eventual National Runner-Up, #2 Memphis.[13]
