The 2016–17 3. Liga will be the ninth season of the 3. Liga.

Teams

A total of 20 teams contest the league, including 14 sides from the 2015–16 3. Liga, the bottom two places of the 2015–16 2. Bundesliga table, the loser of the relegation playoff betweent the third side of the 3. Liga and the 16th placed team from the 2. Bundesliga. The last three contesteans will be the winners of the promotion playoffs of the 2015–16 Regionalliga.
