The Bangabandhu Cup or Bangabandhu Gold Cup was an international association football tournament organised by the Bangladesh Football Federation as a tribute to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. It was launched in 1996, this was the fourth time the tournament had been held. Eight teams from Asian Football Confederation participated in this edition.

Format

In the group stage, 8 teams were divided into two groups of 4-4 teams. Each group was a round-robin of 6 games, where each team played one match against each of the other teams in the same group. Teams were awarded three points for a win, one point for a draw and none for a defeat. The teams finishing first and second in each group qualified to the semi-finals.

Venues

Fifteen matches will be played at two different venues in Dhaka and Jessore. The Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka, and Shamsul Huda Stadium in Jessore. All matches were played at the following two grounds:

In 2016, Nepal defeats Bahrain in final by 3-0 and lifts the trophy.This is the first winning of Nepal in any tournament after 23 years. Within 5 minutes, Nepalese striker Bimal Gharti Magar strikes his 2nd goal for tournament and opens the first score for Nepalese Team. On the assist of Anjan Bista, another striker Bishal Rai scores also his 4th goal for tournament and 2nd goals for the final match to Nepal in the second half. In the injury time, the rising player of Nepal Nawayug Shrestha score his individual 4th scores for whole tournament in the final match; with this, Nepal leads Bahrain by 3-0 goals and lifts the trophy. Striker Bimal Gharti Magar becomes hero of the final and lifts Man of The Final Trophy.
