     2. The winner of the Supporters' Shield;
        
     3. The regular season conference champion that did not win the Supporters' Shield ;
        
     4. The winner of the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup .
        
     Each qualifier is placed in Pot 3, along with the four Mexican qualifiers. Should a team qualify through more than one method, or should a team from Canada occupy any MLS qualifying place, the next best US team in the overall table would take its place.
     One Canada-based team qualifies for the Champions League (NOTE: Canadian teams cannot qualify through MLS):
     1. The winner of the 2016 Canadian Championship
        
     They are placed in Pot 1, along with the three Caribbean qualifiers, the two qualifiers from El Salvador, and one qualifier each from Belize and Nicaragua.
