The 323 series (323系) is a DC electric multiple unit (EMU) train type on order by West Japan Railway Company (JR West) for use on the Osaka Loop Line in Osaka, Japan, from fiscal 2016, replacing ageing 103 series and 201 series trains.[1]

Design

The eight-car trains will have stainless steel bodies, and the exterior livery will feature orange highlights.[1] Each car will have three pairs of sliding doors per side, unlike the four pairs per side on 103 and 201 series trains.[1]

Interior

Passenger accommodation will feature longitudinal bench seating throughout, with priority seating at one end of each car, and a wheelchair/stroller space at the opposite end.[2] The passenger saloons will use LED lighting.[2] Passenger information announcements will be provided in two languages, and information screens will be in four languages (Japanese, English, Chinese, and Korean), with pairs of screens over each door, and pairs at either end of the cars.[2] A WiFi service will also be provided.[2]

Entry into service

A total of 21 8-car sets (168 vehicles) are scheduled to be introduced between fiscal 2016 and 2018, entirely replacing the fleet of 23 103 and 201 series trains.[2]
