New Jersey's 35th Legislative District is one of 40 districts that make up the map for the New Jersey Legislature. It encompasses the Bergen County municipalities of Elmwood Park and Garfield and the Passaic County municipalities of Haledon, North Haledon, Paterson, and Prospect Park.[1]

Demographic information

As of the 2010 United States Census, the district had a population of 209,995, of whom 153,921 (73.3%) were of voting age. The racial makeup of the district was 102,588 (48.9%) White, 49,439 (23.5%) African American, 1,742 (0.8%) Native American, 8,136 (3.9%) Asian, 77 (0.0%) Pacific Islander, 38,730 (18.4%) from some other race, and 9,283 (4.4%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 93,371 (45.9%) of the population.[2]

The district had 111,958 registered voters as of June 30, 2015, of whom 56,356 (50.3%) were registered as unaffiliated, 45,920 (41.0%) were registered as Democrats, 9,637 (8.6%) were registered as Republicans and 45 (0.0%) were registered to other parties.[3]

Political representation

The district is represented for the 2016–2017 Legislative Session (Senate, General Assembly) in the State Senate by Nellie Pou (D, North Haledon) and in the General Assembly by Shavonda E. Sumter (D, Paterson) and Benjie E. Wimberly (D, Paterson).[4][5]

District and election history

The 35th District has always been based around Paterson since its creation in 1973. The 1973 through 1981 version of the district included Paterson, Prospect Park, Hawthorne, and North Haledon.[6] A slight shift in the district occurred in the 1981 redistricting when North Haledon was removed, and Haledon and Elmwood Park were added.[7] West Paterson was added and North Haledon was re-added to the district in the 1991 redistricting.[8] In the 2001 redistricting, West Paterson swapped places with Totowa and Bergen County borough Glen Rock was added.[9]
