Abhay Deol (also known as Abhay Singh Deol) is an Indian film actor and producer of Hindi language films. He was born in the Deol family an influential family of the Hindi cinema.[2] He is the nephew of veteran actor Dharmendra. Deol made his on screen debut in 2005 with the romantic comedy Socha Na Tha. He gained praise for his performances in subsequent films including Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! (2008) and Dev.D (2009).
Deol's performance in 2011's top-grossing film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara earned him his first nomination for Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. He has further receiving critical acclaim for his roles in films such as Chakravyuh (2012), Shanghai (2012) and Raanjhanaa (2013), and being described as an actor who continuously understands how to play complex characters.[2][3]
Early life
Deol was born into a Jat Sikh family to Ajit Singh Deol and Usha Deol.[4] He is the nephew of Film Actor Dharmendra, and the cousin of Esha Deol, Ahana Deol ,Bobby Deol and Sunny Deol.[5][6] Abhay Deol stated in an interview with Rediff that he is not into acting because of his father, but because he was involved in theatre since school. "At 18, I decided to take the plunge. It took me 10 years because I didn't want to leave my education to get into films. "[6]
Acting career
Debut and breakthrough (2005–07)
He made his film debut in the 2005 Imtiaz Ali film Socha Na Tha. His second film was Ahista Ahista in 2006. His first 2007 release was Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. which had a multi-star cast and emerged as a box office success.[7] His second release for the year was Ek Chalis Ki Last Local. His third film in 2007 was Manorama Six Feet Under, which won the Best Film at the Mahindra Indo-American Arts Council Film Festival in New York City. He also won Best Actor award for his role for the same.
Success (2008–11)
Deol devised and enacted the title role of Devdas in the 2009 film Dev.D. Nikhat Kazmi, the critic for Times of India gave the movie a perfect 5 out 5 stars in her review.[8] Abhay Deol has been the cover of Man's World and Time Out Mumbai, with titles such as The New Face of Indian Cinema. He was placed seventh on Zoom's "50 Most Desirable Hotties" poll for 2009.[9] He did Road, Movie[10] with Tannishtha Chatterjee. Deol has also started producing films through his company Forbidden Films. For Basra, the first film under his new production company,[11] Deol learned the Israeli martial art Krav Maga.[12] Abhay did a special Item number for the movie Tera Kya Hoga Johnny in 2010.[13]
Critical acclaim (2011–present)
In 2011, Deol starred in the comedy drama Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara alongside Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Katrina Kaif and Kalki Koechlin. The story that follows three friends, who have been inseparable since childhood, had him play the role of Kabir, an architect. They set off to Spain on a bachelor trip for Kabir who is set to be married to Natasha, an interior designer played by Koechlin.[14] He trained to be a deep-sea diver for the film which was filmed in Spain.[15] The film opened to critical acclaim and grossed ₹1.53 billion (US$23 million) worldwide, surpassing Hrithik's Dhoom 2 in the worldwide gross, becoming the ninth highest worldwide grosser of all time for a Bollywood film, at the time of its release.[16][17]
