The Aetnaville Bridge was built in December 1891. It links the village of Aetnaville, which is part of what is now considered Bridgeport, Ohio to Wheeling Island, which is part of Wheeling, West Virginia. The bridge once carried people to and from the Ohio and West Virginia sides of the Ohio River until the bridge was shut down to vehicular traffic in December 1988, due to safety concerns. The bridge was once a trolley bridge long ago. The bridge is now used mostly as a way for pedestrians, bicyclists, and joggers, to cross without having to go all the way around to the new Bridgeport Bridge.[4] The bridge was closed from October 19th to 23rd, 2015, to be evaluated for safety. Local residents are fighting to save this bridge, because it is a necessary and popular pedestrian footwalk, and part of a five statewide bicycle and jogging trail.[5] As of January 20, 2016, there have been metal fences barricading the bridge pending further decision-making as to how to proceed with possible repairs .
