Alan Roger Currie (born March 3, 1963) is an American author, public speaker and Internet radio personality[1][2] who has written advice books on dating and interpersonal relationships, verbal communication skills, manipulation, seduction, erotic dominance & submission, and engaging in erotically explicit "dirty talk" with women.
Background
Currie was born on March 3, 1963 in Gary, Indiana,[1][2] the son of Dr. Clarence R. Currie, one of the first two African-American graduates of the Indiana University School of Optometry, and Mildred R. Currie, an art teacher in the Gary Community School Corporation.[3] He attended William A. Wirt High School where he served as President of the Student Body during his senior year, and was also elected President of the entire high school population of Gary, Indiana.[3] Currie later attended Indiana University (Bloomington) where he earned Dean's List Scholar honors and a B.A. in Economics[1][2][4] and was a member of the predominantly African-American fraternity Kappa Alpha Psi.[5]
Career
In the mid-1980s, Currie began to land roles in local, regional, and national television commercials.[2][4] In 1989, he won the Miller Lite Comedy Search contest for up-and-coming comedians held in Chicago.[2] He started his brief career as a comedian being the opening act for Robin Harris during the 1989 Circle City Classic in Indianapolis, Indiana. He has made brief appearances on The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet,[6] The Oprah Winfrey Show,[7] The Phil Donahue Show,[8] and The Steve Harvey Television Talk Show.[9]
In the mid-to-late 1990s, Currie shifted from acting and stand-up comedy to writing and screenwriting.[2][4] He started writing his own original comic books when he was six-years old which he sold for $0.05 to $0.15 to his classmates. In May 1994, after completing one year in the Kelley School of Business MBA Program,[1][2] Currie moved to Los Angeles, California where he began pursuing a career as a screenwriter and filmmaker.[2][4] He was hired into the NBC page program in Burbank, California[1][2] and began working for NBC Studios.[4] He later worked for Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation in their Guest Relations and Special Events department.[4]
Dating and relationships author
Currie developed his concept of "The Four Modes of Verbal Communication" in October 1990 and published his first pamphlet in 1998 entitled Mode One: Let Them Know What You're Really Thinking.[10] In the 26 page pamphlet, he outlined general characteristics of each of his "Four Modes" of interpersonal communication styles with women:
- Mode One Behavior – Characterized as highly self-assured, upfront, unapologetic and straightforwardly honest
- Mode Two Behavior – Characterized as pleasant, polite, cautious and "beat-around-the-bush"
- Mode Three Behavior – Characterized as phony, cowardly, deceptive and fawning
- Mode Four Behavior – Characterized as resentful, vindictive, misogynistic and harshly critical
Currie converted his initial pamphlet into an eBook in 1999[11] and began selling it over the Internet. Comedian Ian Coburn described his writing as "refreshing and truly helpful" and felt that Currie's advice "encourages men to become confident and tells them how to do so." Currie believes, "If you are attracted to a woman, the best way to capture her attention is to tell her what your intentions are; She may initially gasp in shock, but she is more likely to go out with you."[12]
Currie was a speaker at the first "Direct Dating Summit for Men" in London, England in 2010. The weekend conference has since been held in various cities all over the world geared toward helping single heterosexual men who are looking for advice on how to improve their interpersonal communication skills with single women of interest. He has spoken at several of these conferences.[13][14][15]
Currie appeared in the July 2008 edition of Essence magazine.[16] He was hired to teach an Adult Education course, "Dating for 21st Century Singles", through Indiana University Northwest in Gary, Indiana.[17] He has also written for Examiner.com.
Books
Currie has released several self-published books, mostly centered on dating and interpersonal communication between men and women. Mode One: Let the Women Know What You're REALLY Thinking (February 2006) was intended to provide self-help and dating advice for heterosexual men. The book was detailed reviewed[18] also by Editor Jackson Hunter.
Upfront and Straightforward: Let the Manipulative Game Players Know What You're REALLY Thinking (March 2009) was written to help single men and women identify "manipulative head games" that members of the opposite sex might employ in dating.
Oooooh... Say It Again: Mastering the Fine Art of Verbal Seduction and Aural Sex (December 2011) centers on Freud's Madonna-whore complex theory on men's behavior toward women, and their pursuit of short-term, non-monogamous sexual companionship versus more romantic, long-term, monogamous sexual relationships with women. The book also provides Currie's advice on "verbal seduction" and men becoming more erotically dominant with women.
The Possibility of Sex: How Naïve and Lustful Men are Manipulated by Women Regularly (October 2012) is about the behavior of women who Currie refers to as "Manipulative Timewasters", or women who, according to Currie, use the possibility of sex to gain favors from men.
Radio personality
Since June 2007, Currie has hosted an Internet radio show on the BlogTalkRadio Internet Radio Network titled Upfront & Straightforward with Alan Roger Currie. His show primarily centers on interviews and discussions with dating coaches, relationship experts, sexologists, seduction gurus, marriage counselors and life coaches.[5] He also hosted an adults-only podcast program entitled The Erotic Conversationalist[19] which was a blend of talk radio interviews with women and erotically explicit flirtatious conversations with his female guests that sometimes transitioned into phone sex.[20]
Views on the seduction community
Currie has resisted having his name associated with the seduction community, which includes pickup artists and speakers such as Neil Strauss, Mystery, Ross Jeffries and Roosh V, among others. He stated:
The main weakness in most of the behavior of the typical pickup artist (PUA) is they tend to be deeply afraid of harsh, subjective criticisms from women, as well as abrupt rejection. When you are afraid of negative responses and/or harsh criticism, that puts you into Mode Two behavior; when you are afraid of being rejected and/or indefinitely ignored, that puts you into Mode Three behavior. PUA's are manipulative in their behavior, which in turn, opens them up to be easily manipulated."[21]
Currie has criticized attraction and seduction techniques which emphasize or utilize misleading or manipulative tactics, saying, "Manipulation can provide benefits in the short-run, but very rarely if ever in the long-run. At some point, your real, true self will come to the surface." He has said that attempts to manipulate make people more vulnerable to themselves being manipulated.[22]
