History

Toponymy

The name Albany Park was given to the area when its local station on the Dartford Loop Line was opened on 7 July 1935, following the building of a new housing estate nearby.

Origins

Albany Park was largely populated in the 1930s, as a result of increasing urbanisation into areas of Kent. The majority of houses in the area were built in the 1930s, and are of typical working class or lower middle class associations, though a newly renovated private mansion house exists bordering woodland. As a result of this, the area, along with many other areas, was ceded from Kent to Greater London in the 1960s. The area was a risk from bombing during the Second World War, and as such several air raid shelters have been unearthed in locals' gardens.

Recent

Albany Park has seen the formation of a new football club in July 2005; Woodside United (with the majority of the players living in neighbouring West and East Woodside, two roads bordering on Bexley Park Wood).
