Alex Sholler, better known by her stage name Alison Wonderland, is a Sydney-based DJ and producer signed to EMI Music Australia, which is part of Universal Music Australia.[1] She initially trained as a classical musician, and is a trained cellist.[2] In 2014 she embarked on a national tour playing in warehouses across Australia.[3] Wonderland's debut album, Run, was released on 20 March 2015.[4]
Career
2013-14: "Get Ready", "Calm Down" and commercial breakthrough
After signing with EMI music Australia, Alison Wonderland gained popularity after her debut single "Get Ready," which features Sydney duo Fishing, was released on January 1, 2013.[5] Soon after on June 27, 2014, her debut EP "Calm Down" was released and peaked at 38 on the ARIA chart, which preceded with singles "I Want U" and "Cold". "I Want U" peaked at 38 on the ARIA Charts as well as topping the Hype Machine charts, and subsequently became her biggest hit until her single "Run." The Extended Play was praised by Major Lazer member Diplo and Annie Mac.[6]
2015-present: "Run"
On February 11, 2015 Wonderland released the lead single from her debut album titled "U Don't Know," which featured Wayne Coyne from The Flaming Lips. The music video gained popularity due to Christopher Mintz-Plasse's lead role in the video against Wonderland.[7] It peaked at 63 on the ARIA charts. The single currently has over three million streams on Spotify as of January 20, 2016.[8] Following multiple album launch parties at a strip clubs,[9] her debut album Run was released on March 20, 2015 in Australia and on April 7, 2015 in the United States. It featured many Australian artists including Slumberjack and SAFIA as well as producers from around the world such as Djemba Djemba, Awe, and Lido. The two singles from her debut extended play, "I Want U" and "Cold," were also included on the album. It peaked at number 6 in Australia and number 12 in New Zealand. K Spence from YourEDM.com praised the album due to its diversity and her involvement in the album, as she was credited as a writer, vocalist and producer.[10] The titular track was then released as a single on June 11, 2015, along with its music video. The music video peaked at number 6 in Australia which made it her biggest hit to date. "Run" had over 2 million streams on Spotify as of January 20, 2016.[11]
On August 4, 2015 "Take It To Reality" featuring SAFIA became the third single from Run and did not chart. The music video was released on the same date.[12] Following the release of Take It To Reality, on September 4, 2015 Run was released in the United Kingdom. The fourth single "Games" was released on September 9, 2015, and was praised by YourEDM for its lack of trap elements, in which most of Wonderland's music incorporates.[10] The music video was released on the same day and was a one take scene of Wonderland performing many sports including Grid Iron, Martial Arts and Chess.[13] A Deluxe edition of "Run" was released on October 30, 2015 which included remixes of the singles "U Don't Know", "I Want U", "Games", "Run", "Take It To Reality" and "Get Ready".[14]
Alison Wonderland was nominated for two ARIA awards in 2015, Best Dance Release (for the single "Run") and Best Video (for "U Don't Know" featuring Wayne Coyne). The latter was in a category that was publicly voted upon. She was one of eight nominees to gain exactly two nominations. Other nominees included The Veronicas, 5 Seconds Of Summer, the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Meg Mac, and Peking Duk.[15]
On Australia Day 2016, Wonderland's song "Run" appeared on Triple J's Hottest 100 peaking at #59 behind Parkway Drive, Foolish and Sia.[16] On February 6, 2016, Wonderland previewed a new original track called "Messiah" at a show, which showed more pop elements than her earlier material.[17]
