Amethi is a town in Amethi district in Faizabad division, of Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is a major town of the district of the same name and also a municipal board.

Amethi is known for being the constituency of Indian Nehru-Gandhi Family since 1980. Amethi has been a Congress stronghold since its formation in 1966. The former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, his grandsons Sanjay and Rajiv Gandhi (the sons of Indira Gandhi), Rajiv Gandhi's widow Sonia Gandhi and son Rahul Gandhi, have at one time or the other, represented this constituency. Amethi has elected Non-Nehru dynasty Congress person to parliament for two terms (Vidyadhar Bajpai 1966-77) and a non-congress M.P once (Ravindra Pratap Singh, Janata Party, 1977–80) [1]

History

In past, Amethi used to be called as Raipur-Amethi. Raipur is the place where the fort of Raja of Amethi. His ancestors used to reside in Raipur-Phulwari, where old fort is still there. Amethi is also famous for the temple called Hanumangarhi and a mosque both built about hundred years ago. About three kilometres north of Amethi there is a tomb of famous poet which is in Ram Nagar, Saint Malik Muhammad Jayasi where he died, and the fort was built by Bachghoti Rajas.[2]

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[3] Amethi had a population of 12,808. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%.

Transport

Amethi is connected to the major cities in Uttar Pradesh and North-Eastern India via Indian Railways and roads. Amethi railway station has direct trains connecting with major cities like Jammu , Amritsar,Delhi, Lucknow, Kanpur, Dehradun, Haridwar, Jaipur , Allahabad, Varanasi, Kolkata, Puri, Bhopal, Mumbai and Bangalore.

A number of Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation buses play from Amethi.

Institutions

The town is a local education center, with some institutions more than 100 years old. These include the Rajarshi Rananjay Singh Group of Institutions, Prime Educational Institutes are Indian Institute of Information Technology, Rajarshi Rananjay Singh Institute of Management & Technology, Rajarshi Rananjay Sinh College of Pharmacy and Ranveer Rananjay Post Graduate College.

Amethi district contains 1,431 government primary schools,433 government upper primary schools, 33 government-aided primary schools, 42 madrasas and 145 intermediate schools, including 18 government inter-colleges.Famous two non-government intermediate schools are Shri Shiv Pratap Inter College and Rajarshi Rananjay Inter college.

In main Amethi city, there is 11 public sector banks and in private sector there is banks named ICICI,CBI,PNB,BOB,BOI and SBI bank.

Industries

Due to High Profile constituency mainly public sector units established in Amethi Like Hindustan Aeronatic Limited, BHEL, Indo gulf fertilizers established in 70s

Due to lack of basic amenities like Power, the presence of private sector organizations is rare - exception being ACC [Associate Cement Company].
