Analysys Mason Group (AMG) is a research and advisory firm providing telecoms, media and technology (TMT) related insight. AMG was founded in 1985 in Cambridge by David Cleevely. Its headquarters are in London with other offices globally. Its consultancy division works with organisations across the TMT industry: operators, vendors, governments, regulators, service and content providers, financial institutions and private equities. Meanwhile, AMG's research and analysis division track and forecast the different services accessed by consumers and enterprises.[1]
History
Then called Analysys Ltd was founded in by David Cleevely in 1985 [2] as a struggling startup in Cambridge. In 2015 Cleevely was quoted by Business Weekly : “The startup Analysys operated around about the breadline and sometimes, there was hardly a crust to be had! An old friend who had his own small company bought us the first computer and printer and let me repay the loan slowly. Otherwise I bootstrapped. It was pretty tough – one year I didn’t pay myself anything at all." [3]
As Analysys strengthened it's position in the market, Cleevely made a significant contribution to the theory and practice of calculating Universal Service Obligation costs and was involved with a report to the European Commission on VoIP creating the framework for VoIP within the EU and the identification of The Broadband Gap [4] – where the cost of supply would exceed the price consumers were willing to pay which prompted UK Government policy intervention in 2001–2005 to force increased broadband infrastructure in the UK. In the early years Analysys used to run workshops and conferences as part of its marketing, but because 80 per cent of their business was abroad and most of their clients were very large they did almost no business or networking in Cambridge. This lead Cleevely in 1997 to co-found the Cambridge Network with Hermann Hauser, Alec Broers, Nigel Brown, Fred Hallsworth and Anthony Ross.[5]
In 2004 Analysys Ltd was acquired by Datatec International - the global arm of South Africa-based Datatec for $23.4 million. A new company was formed called Analysys Mason Group (AMG), as an umbrella brand which included the businesses of both Analysys and Datatec’s existing telecom group, Mason Group. Datatec funded the $23m acquisition with cash, including some of the proceeds from the sale of its Logicalis operations in Australia and New Zealand.[6][7]
