André Tiago Carneiro Soares (born 5 March 1990) is a Portuguese footballer who plays for Vilaverdense as a forward.
Club career
Born in Vieira do Minho, Braga District, Soares started his football career in Vieira at age 10. A year later, he moved to the much larger Sporting de Braga, staying there for three years. In 2004, he traded them for to the under-15 ranks of Benfica, where he completed his development.[1]
When he finished his youth career in 2009, Benfica offered him a professional contract and loaned him to Carregado, in the club first ever season in a professional league.[2] He made his professional debut on 15 November, in Liga de Honra match with Feirense.[3] He made only three appearances in half a season, so Benfica recalled him back and to loan him to Atlético instead.[4] After six months in the Segunda Divisão; in June 2010, Soares moved to the Swiss Challenge League to play for Servette FC on a loan deal.[5] He reunited with his former youth coach at Benfica, João Alves, but was only used sparingly throughout the season.[6]
With his contract with Benfica expired, he moved to Marítimo on 31 August 2011.[7] He competed for their reserve team in the third tier, and remained with them on their promotion to the Segunda Liga in 2012–13.[8] Following his spell at Marítimo, Soares played for Famalicão in the newly created Campeonato Nacional de Seniores, before moving to Vilaverdense a year later.[1][9] His season in Vila Verde caught the attention of Gil Vicente, who signed him in June 2015.[10] They describe him as a technically gifted player, who was one of the best in the Série A of the Campeonato Nacional.[10] Nevertheless, six months later, Soares returned to Vilaverdense, as the club strengthened their squad for the battle of promotion.[11][12]
International career
Soares helped Portugal reach the final of the Val-de-Marne Tournament in October 2005.[13][14][15] He also play the qualifying stage of the 2007 UEFA European Under-17 Championship for Portugal, and received his two final caps at under–18 level, playing a total of ten games for Portugal.[15]
