The Anglo-American School of Moscow (Russian: Англо-американская школа - Москва "Anglo-amerikanskaya Shkola - Moskva") in Moscow, Russia, is an independent, non-profit, co-educational, international day school catering for students between the ages of 4 and 18, chartered by the American, British and Canadian embassies. It is located in the Pokrovskoye-Streshnevo District in the north-west of Moscow. Pre-kindergarten through 12th grade is available and utilizes the International Baccalaureate program, including the Primary Years Program for younger children. It was founded in 1949 for the children of embassy officials in Russia. It moved to a new, purpose-built campus in a wooded location in north west Moscow, near Pokrovsky Hills, in 2000, and now has over 1250 students from over 60 nationalities. The majority of students are the children of diplomats and foreign businesspeople. Further improvements since 2000 have seen the addition of a 630-seat theater, a swimming pool, an all-weather sports pitch, and additional classrooms. The school leans heavily on an American, holistic style of teaching, exemplified by its mission and values, primary among which are the slogans "love learning" and "respect self", which are represented by several posters around the school, and in posters that hang in every classroom.[1]
Overview
The school is organized into three divisions, Elementary School (PreK-grade 5), the Middle School (grades 6-8) and High School (grades 9-12). Each division has a Principal (Elementary School: George Dolesch, Middle School: Mike Johnson, High School: Paul Sexton), the whole school operating under the aegis of a Director and a Board of Trustees. The Director is Jon Zurfluh, who arrived in 2011, replacing Drew Alexander who had been head of the school from 2003 to 2011. Class sizes are typically 18 students.
The high school offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), and also a college-preparatory program leading to a High School Diploma. The elementary school offers the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP). In recent years, the school has had trouble with over-predicting grades at the IBDP, and therefore has begun a campaign to stop students from asking for better predicted grades, which has led to strife between the administration and the parent community. The school generally performs well,[2] some graduates even being accepted by Ivy League schools, and generally has an IB score that is slightly above the world average.
First priority on admission is given to the children of American, British and Canadian diplomats, second priority is for the children of those countries (America, Britain and Canada) and third is given to children whose parents work for a company or organization that has reserved seats. Any remaining places are available to any child who meets the general admission requirements, while limiting to 15% the number of students from any one country except the United States, United Kingdom and Canada. The school is currently heavily oversubscribed, but welcomes admissions inquiries.
Financial Costs
The school is a not-for-profit organization wholly financed by school fees, though it does receive a small annual U.S. State Department grant which is used to enhance learning support programs and campus security. Support from the chartering embassies is of a non-financial nature.
